I'm Merv. I've been photographing women in London for 10 years, 850-odd sessions, and the question I hear most on welcome calls isn't about posing or outfits. It's some version of "why does one studio say £19 and another say £1,800? What am I actually going to spend?"
Fair question. Here's the honest answer, and it starts with understanding one number: the session fee.
The session fee is the tell
Almost every boudoir studio in London charges in two parts: a fee to book the session, then your images afterwards. The studios themselves publish totals that mostly land somewhere between £800 and £5,000 once a woman has chosen her images. That's the real shape of the market, in their own published words.
So why can you find boudoir shoots advertised at £14, £19, £99?
Think about what a proper session day actually takes to deliver. A private space for several hours. A professional hair and makeup artist. A photographer directing you frame by frame for the best part of a day. Editing. A viewing. None of that can be bought for £19, and everyone selling it knows that.
Which means when a session fee is far below what the day costs to run, the fee isn't the price. It's a ticket to a sales appointment. The shoot gets you in the room; the real transaction happens at the viewing, days later, once you've fallen in love with photos you don't yet own, image by image, pack by pack. One deal site advert I saw recently said "£14, 98% off £560", which tells you where the money actually is.
I want to say this carefully, because some of the people running that model are genuinely talented photographers and I've no interest in a war with anyone. It's a business model, not a crime. But you deserve to see it coming, because the woman who budgets £99 and gets emotionally ambushed into £900 at a viewing is the person this page is for.
The test: does the fee match the day?
A session fee that roughly reflects the cost of delivering the day tells you the studio isn't relying on the viewing to spring anything on you. Could the advertised fee realistically cover the day being described? If not, you now know where the real price lives.
When do I see my photos, and how are they sold? Same-day reveal in your own hands, or a viewing appointment built around the sale?
Is there a minimum spend? Some studios have one. We don't.
What happens if I hate my photos? Ask about guarantees. Then ask how often they've been used.
Any good studio will answer all four without flinching. If one flinches, that's your answer.
What you're actually paying for
One last honest thing. Whatever studio you choose, when the total for a proper boudoir experience lands where the market says it lands, you're not paying for a memory card of files. You're paying for someone who has directed hundreds of women through the exact thoughts you might be having, a private space where nothing is shared without your written say-so, and photographs with zero Photoshop, because the person in them is you and that's the entire point.
