Celebrating the Magic of Motherhood: A Guide to Maternity Boudoir
Pregnancy is, quite frankly, a bit of a trip. One minute you’re marvelling at the fact that you’re literally growing a human skeletal system while eating a piece of toast, and the next, you’re staring in the mirror, wondering whose body this actually is. The curves are different, the skin is stretching, and the "glow" everyone talks about sometimes feels more like a permanent heatwave.
In the whirlwind of scans, nursery decorating, and debating the merits of different pram suspension systems, it’s incredibly easy for you to get lost in the shuffle. Most maternity photography focuses purely on the "expecting" part: the shoes, the bump, the anticipation. But Maternity Boudoir is different. It’s a celebration of you, your strength, and the incredible transition you’re navigating. It’s about capturing the magic of motherhood while keeping your identity as a woman front and centre.
At You At Yours, we don’t do the "perfection" thing. We do the "you" thing. Here’s the lowdown on why a maternity session might be the best thing you do for your confidence before the big arrival.
The Science of Seeing Yourself
You might be thinking, "Mervyn, I feel like a whale, why on earth would I want to get in front of a camera in my knickers?"
It’s a fair question. But there’s some fascinating stuff going on in our brains when we go through big physical shifts. It’s called embodied cognition: the idea that our physical state deeply influences our mental state. When your body changes rapidly during pregnancy, your brain can struggle to keep up with your new "map" of yourself. This can lead to a bit of a disconnect or even a dip in self-esteem.
A maternity boudoir session acts as a form of visual therapy. By seeing high-quality, artful images of yourself, you’re essentially "installing new software" in your brain. It helps you integrate this new version of your body into your identity. We use the "magic camera" (as I like to call it) to show you the power and grace in those new curves, helping you move from "I look different" to "I look incredible." It’s about building a bridge of self-acceptance before life gets even busier.
When is the "Sweet Spot"?
Timing is everything. You want a bump that’s looking distinct and round, but you also want to feel comfortable enough to move around without feeling like you’ve just completed a triathlon.
Generally, the best time to book your maternity boudoir session is between 28 and 34 weeks.
Before 28 weeks: The bump might not be as "pronounced" as you’d like for those iconic silhouette shots.
After 34 weeks: You might start to feel a bit more tired, and the "heavy" feeling kicks in. We want you to enjoy the experience, not spend the whole time wishing you could sit down with a bag of ice.
Of course, every pregnancy is a unique journey. If you’re carrying twins or just feeling particularly "ready" earlier, we’ll work around you. The goal is to catch you when you’re feeling your most vibrant.
What to Wear: Authentic Self-Expression
Forget the itchy lace that doesn't fit or the "novelty" props. We’re all about self-expression that feels authentic. The best outfits for a maternity session are the ones that make you feel like a goddess, not a character in a play.
Sheer Robes & Draped Fabrics: There is something incredibly ethereal about a flowing robe. It allows us to play with light and shadow, highlighting the bump while giving you a bit of "cover" if you’re feeling shy.
Form-Fitting Bodysuits: If you want to celebrate the sleek silhouette of your changing body, a bodysuit is a winner. It accentuates every curve and looks incredibly sophisticated.
Your Favourite Lingerie: If you have a set that still fits and makes you feel like "you," bring it! Neutral tones or deep jewel colours work beautifully with our natural light setup.
The "Normal" Stuff: Don’t be afraid to keep it casual. An oversized white shirt or even a pair of unbuttoned jeans can look stunning. You can absolutely wear normal clothes to your shoot.
The focus is on how the clothing makes you feel. If you feel powerful, it’s going to show in the photos.
The You At Yours Way: No Photoshop, Just You
I have a very firm stance on this: I don’t use Photoshop to "fix" people.
During pregnancy, your skin changes. You might get stretch marks (or "tiger stripes" as many of our clients call them), your pigmentation might shift, and your body will hold weight in new places. In the traditional photography world, these are often "airbrushed away."
At You At Yours, we think that’s rubbish.
Those marks are the story of your body doing something miraculous. Why would we want to erase the evidence of your strength? We use expert lighting and posing to make you look your absolute best, but the person in the photo will always be you. Real skin, real textures, real magic. When you look back at these photos in ten years, you won’t see a "perfected" digital mannequin; you’ll see the powerful woman who brought a new life into the world.
If you're worried about how to pose or "looking awkward," don't be. I’ve spent years perfecting the art of how to not look awkward on camera. I’ll guide you through every movement, from the tilt of your chin to the placement of your hands.
What to Expect During Your Session
We keep things relaxed. The studio is a safe, private space in London where you can just be. We’ll start with a coffee (or a decaf!) and a chat about what you’re hoping to get out of the session.
The Lighting: We love natural light. It’s soft, forgiving, and creates a beautiful, timeless feel.
The Poses: We’ll use mirrors and window light to create artistic silhouettes. Sometimes we’ll have you lounging comfortably, other times standing tall. We move at your pace: if you need a break or a snack, we take one.
The Vibe: It’s low-pressure. Think of it less like a "photoshoot" and more like a morning of self-care. We might even do some naked star jumps if the mood needs lightening (only joking... unless you want to!).
Why This Matters
Motherhood is a massive identity shift. For many, it feels like the "old you" is being replaced. But a maternity boudoir session serves as a reminder that you are still that sensual, beautiful, and independent woman: just with an added layer of incredible strength.
It’s about why you will love your photos: not because they look like a magazine cover, but because they capture a feeling. The feeling of being "at yours" in your own skin.
As one of our recent clients put it: "I was so nervous about my changing body, but Mervyn made me feel like a work of art. I see these photos and I don't see the weight I've gained; I see the life I'm creating. It changed everything for me."
